DO NOT REPLY [Bug 45526] New: PDF documentation is not properly
searchable due to improper use of underscores
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=45526
Summary: PDF documentation is not properly searchable due to
improper use of underscores
Product: Apache httpd-2
Version: 2.2.2
Platform: All
URL: http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/docs/httpd-docs-
2.2.2.en.pdf
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: Documentation
AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
ReportedBy: nate@natesilva.com
In the PDF version of the Apache HTTP Server Documentation, many instances of
the underscore character (_) are converted to a space character with
underlining turned on.
The practical implication is that the documentation cannot be searched for any
term that includes an underscore, making the PDF version much less useful.
For example, searching for "mod_cgi" using Adobe Reader 9 returns no results.
This should be fixed by using real underscores, instead of using typography to
simulate that character.

Ugh! Care to help me figure out where in xml->xslt->latex->pdflatex->pdf this
is broken? My guess is pdflatex, so I could conceivably try
xml->xslt->latex->dvi->dvips->ps->acrobat->pdf to see if it fixed it.
But really, the pdf is intended mostly for printing. Other formats are much
more browsable/searchable. So I'm not sure if it is worth fixing.
