[HttpClient] HttpClient 3.x deployed at the new location (Commons nore more)

Folks,

I deployed HttpClient 3.1 site at the new location under HttpComponents

http://jakarta.apache.org/httpcomponents/httpclient-3.x/

I am going to make a formal announcement of the release tomorrow and am
going to ask Commons folks to remove all references to HttpClient from
their site, setup a redirect to the new location, and delete all
HttpClient packages from their distribution location

http://www.apache.org/dist/commons/httpclient/

HttpClient 3.x release packages are now available at

http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/httpcomponents/commons-httpclient-3.x/

The divorce is nearly complete. 'she gets the house and the kids, he
gets to keep the car and the dog' kind of thing. Sad.

I think it is about time we removed all release packages but 3.1, as
this is effectively the only release of the 3.x codeline we are able to
provide support for.

I am on holidays as of tomorrow. I'll take care of it when I am back.

Probably a good idea to remove the older versions (they are in the
archive if needed)

2.0.2 could be deleted now; 3.0.1 needs to wait until the download
page has been updated and synched.

Hi Roland,

It did not get around to approach Commons folks before the vacation. I
did a few days ago

http://www.nabble.com/-Site--HttpClient--old-HttpClient-web-site-moved-to-HttpComponents-tf4384436.html

No one reacted so far and I am afraid nobody will.

I'll take care of that later today.

I think they now use Maven2 to publish their web site. I do not feel
like spending my time on figuring out the way the process is supposed to
work. I suggest we leave the decision about removal of references to
HttpClient from Commons site up to them. The redirect you set up seems
sufficient for now.

Cheers

The same needs to be done in:

/www/www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/httpcomponents/commons-httpclient-3.x
  sources
  binaries

but I'll leave that to you - unless you want me to do it?

OK.

I just meant if you see a page with an incorrect reference, let the
commons people know. They can do the rest.

Hi Sebastian,

OK, I was missing the "www.apache.org" part :-)

The web server seems to combine HEADER.html with a directory listing.
We could add a redirect to the parent directory, but in Jakarta I've
seen an .htaccess-archive in addition to .htaccess and I don't know how
that affects mirrors. Maybe it's simpler to just delete the directory
and let people navigate to the new download location via the web site.

> Probably best to just send them a note of the references that need to

I don't feel like tracking that down. I'm sure there is somewhere
an XML file listing all components, and maybe a second one used for
the download pages. But that's up to them, as long as there is no
outdated copy of our stuff within their domain. If I had found the
files, I would have changed them myself rather than hope for some
reaction from the Commons folks. It probably doesn't fit their
organizational structure to have a subproject for which nobody on
their mailing lists feels responsible.

cheers, and thanks again,
  Roland

I think that's
   /www/www.apache.org/dist/commons/httpclient
on people

I've emptied it of all the old releases (which are in archives anyway).

One could create a index page to point to the new directory?

There will be a new archive directory, so the download page
could/should now have two links.

Don't know whether you forgot to ask or whether nobody acted
on it. I've now set up redirects from Commons and our old Jakarta
location, after realizing that I can do that in an .htaccess file
without getting Infra involved. The temporary HttpClient site in
Commons and their download pages for HttpClient are gone.
I don't know where to find their distribution directory though:

References on their site are still present, but they are now
redirected to the correct location. I couldn't find the source
from which they generate their site.
