VariableReference given for variable out of context or without definition!

Hi, I received the message
"VariableReference given for variable out of context or without definition!"

The message was totally correct but I am a bit puzzled about the fact that
it is only issued on the standard output stream, and that no exception were
thrown.

Souldn't an expcetion be thrown when such a problem occurs?
