Updating all ws project sites to use the mirrored downloads

Folks,
Am not sure if you have noticed. downloads for all WS projects are available through our
mirror'ing system (http://ws.apache.org/mirrors.cgi).

Tetsuya,
Do you have some time to help implement a download page for each WS project? For example the Axis
project's download page will look like the other axis pages and will allow downloads for axis
only. Please let me know.

Thanks,
dims

Why certainly -using 0.5 I guess.

I'd like to sit down and get the axis docs into a form that is good for
on screen and PDF navigation. I like printable stuff for the complex
bits, and axis falls into that category. Can Forrest generate PDFs from
the doc templates too?

I saw some hint of Docbook mentioned in the release notes -can we move
the core docs to docbook format and have Forrest deal with it, or is it
the other way around (Forrest XML -> DocBook -> LaTeX -> PDF)

Tetsuya,

I will back you up under one condition. You need to get a current committer of say Apache Axis to
start a VOTE for standardizing Axis web site. Then when majority VOTE's ok, then you (and the
committers) for that project can start the process of forrestizing that particular project. This
should NOT be forced from above. For example, you will have my +1 for Apache Axis site when there
is a VOTE in the axis-dev mailing list NOT on the general mailing list. The reason is in the long
run the committers for a project are responsible for the web site of their project.

Thanks,
dims

Use Forrest (Re: Updating all ws project sites to use the mirrored downloads)

Posted by Tetsuya Kitahata <te...@apache.org>.
Hi, Sanjiva, All

Thank you for putting your precious "plus one" to me :-)

I think the standardization of the website build would be important
for us (ws-proj). However, at the same time, we have to think of
the human resources to accomplish the standardizations.

I would love to volunteer to make changes on the current structures of
each (XMLRPC, SOAP, etc.) subprojects to be fit to what the FORREST
requires. Current XMLRPC (and SOAP/WS/wsrp4j..gyaaa Anakia!) members do
not have to think of and master the Apache Forrest itself.
# Also, I will put a page on ws.apache.org about "HOW TO BUILD WEBSITES".
# in the near future.

On the supposition of it described above, what would you all say? :-)
Opinions?

Sincerely,

-- Tetsuya. (tetsuya@apache.org)

I agree that in principle its in the hands of the XMLRPC committers.
However, it would indeed be VERY nice IMO if the WS project were
to standardize on a build system, at least for new projects that
we start up. Having standardized infrastructure makes it easier
for developers to move across projects, for example.

I'm a +1 for Tetsuya's suggestion.

Sanjiva.

Re: Updating all ws project sites to use the mirrored downloads

I am not a committer of WS-XMLRPC, so this below is just my
innocent observation/opinion.

As you know, Apache Jakarta consists of various build systems,
Maven/Anakia/Forrest/XSLT (Centipede in the past). Maybe you would say,
"The name 'Jakarta' implied the balkanization of each subprojects
into the realm of small islands" ... This is historical problem of
Jakarta Project, it seems.

On the other hand, WebServices Project is *new* and *young*.
So, the standardization of the build system could make sense
and be easy to be done.
Now, ws-site is using Forrest ... therefore, when thinking of the
standardization of webservices project's subprojects,
it could be a natural thing of them to be unified to the
Forrest build system.

Of course, this is the matter of the decision of WS-XMLRPC
Development Team and WebServices Project's PMC members.
The Apache XML Project is the most beautiful project from
this point of view - "consistency".

Sincerely,

-- Tetsuya. (tetsuya@apache.org)

I don't know of any pressing need to switch (though it sure would be
nice if Maven would put out a dot-oh release). If anything, as Ryan
said, we simply need to use Maven better (though I'm quite happy with
just Ant for the needs of XML-RPC).

I made a mistake...i thought xmlrpc uses forrest. BUT it uses maven. NO need to change.
