[proposal]: Enhance visualisation of Handles
Hi List,
I took the time and started to look technically and bitmap'ally at the
handles and how to make them some nicer, but also more useful (aka
slightly transparent). For deeper information, please see the task
(https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121463) I have opened for it.
I know handles and how they look is a question of taste; I tried to
carefully alter them and did not take away any existiong options (two
sets, two sizes to choose from, plus HighContrast). To take a look,
follow the link to find the things I changed and the bitmaps in the
files referenced there.
P.S.: I actually used Draw and it's 3D engine to create the handles
before scaling them down in a bitmap program, it's all in there :-)

You are the only one that uses Libreoffice ;).
For the record I don't like transparency either but I am only basing
on Armin's screenshots ...

Okay, I see. I would not call it 'snap handles' but just snapping during
the interaction. Could You write a task for it, it sounds reasonable.

There are two effects; the first is to use the alpha channel to no
langer have that pixel-edges at the border of the handles. The second is
to allow seeing that below a handle something else is positioned that
might be of interest. This happens for the handles in cases where tese
may be in the same place (e.g. custom shapes where the yellow handle is
initially not visible since it's 'behind' one of the normal ones (also
on the circle segment object AFAIR).
Do not forget that it's just a 'hint' and the handles are only
transparent on their inner part, and only slightly (30%). I am very
careful with this; the main purpose of handles is and will stay to
recognize the handle itself easily and with no distortions forthe eye
(it should be pleasing and functional).
Another case where this is useful it with the relatively big Anchor
handles in Writer and Calc which are by definition positioned at the
start of a paragraph, line or word. It helps to be able to read the
start of the word for recognizing the whole word, even if it's only a
hint for the eye.

Try to draw a parallelogram (from custom shapes) so that its upper edge
is shifted 2cm to the right. Or for a polar handle, try to draw a sector
(from custom shapes), which has exactly 30degree. It is not possible
with the current UI.
For classical sector shape exists a workaround: set a snap angle in
Tools>Options. Or for a parallelogram use a polygon and snap lines. But
that do not work for custom shapes.
I see no advantage of transparency. You loose the brightness and neon
colors and get what? Please try it in LibreOffice.
What do others think? Or I'm the only one who often use Draw?

Thanks for the Hint. The transparency is only at the *inner* of the
handles, the border is not transparent. I just tried with black, and it
looks not bad (added document OldNew2.odp and OldNew2.png). But you made
me aware of the rotation marker (the one where you can change the center
of rotation); that one needs some white to have contrast on black. Doing
this...

Hi Armin,
getting bigger handles is good. But I'm not convinced, that transparency
is good. Please try the handles in a presentation, which has a dark
background, like some master pages in our new set. LibreOffice has
handles with transparency and I noticed, that they cannot be seen so
good as the bright handles of AOO.
More helpful for exact positions than transparency would be snap
functions for handles and a tab in the size&position dialog for entering
values directly.
Especially the 3D handles are really nice and it is good that you show,
what can be done in Draw.
Kind regards

The buildbot version has it now and I tried it. The transparency for the
anchor icon is really a large improvement. And the handles have a good
compromise between brightness and transparency. The draw center and
mirror axis markers are visible in front of dark backgrounds too. So I
think, well done. :)

Have you tried http://people.apache.org/~alg/ and the files there
already? There I provided some screenshots, as described in the discussion.
These screenshots are a lot of work, since with a normal one you can

I am also interested in a screenshot. It would save me time and trouble
not to have to wait for the next build, locate it, download it and
install it. And I could watch it in the morning on my IPad.

Are you talking about changing the UI/Controller implementations? That
did not happen. If not, all this can better be tested locally on your
machine when you have installed a version containing that change.

Armin,
Could you share a screen cap?
Any chance of including rotation, shear and skew?

I have comitted this now, mainly that all get the chance to have a look
and play around with it. Please do not hesitate when you see negative
effects or something that needs to be re-evaluated. Comitting it does
not mean it's the end of the story :-)
For the worst case, svn *is* a time machine. I (still) hope that the
handles which are more pleasing to the eye find mostly everyones liking.
I was very careful, the change is moderate.
Just take a look first ;-)
Sincerely,
