[Apache Bloodhound] #174: Scroll spy in ticket view

 Ticket view is rather complex and contains many (potentially long)
 sections . It'd be nice to have
 [http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/javascript.html#scrollspy scroll spy]
 indicator in sticky panel (i.e. always visible) in order to navigate to
 any of them directly . This should only be activated if Javascript is
 enabled in client browser .

 I think that's a small enough issue that we can raise a separate ticket to
 look at it again later.

 ok

 ... but still may be useful afaics . Could we just expand corresponding
 section too when scrollspy nav item is clicked ?

 lowermost relevant element, which would be a 'section' anyway. Same for

 hmmm ... they will be removed dynamically , using ''jQuery'' magic

Comment (by olemis):

 [attachment:t174_r1381145_ticket_scrollspy.diff Attached patch] implements
 sticky scrollspy navbar considering the following features :

   - Navbar shown only when status pane becomes sticky
   - When clicking on navbar item target section will be expanded .
   - Inline nav links e.g. [# Modify ↓] and [# View ↑] are hidden
 immediately after scrollspy is setup.

 Changes built against theme plugin @ r1381145 .

Comment (by olemis):

 Following the instructions in mockups for responsive capabilities ( #217 ,
 #223 ) , I've refreshed initial patch to build these features on top of
 patches submitted for #206 . I've also rebased all changes in order to
 apply it against theme plugin @ r1394017 (notice changes in file name) and
 reverted date fields floating to the right . Besides there are two new
 patches . The first one adds icons in scrollspy nav box whereas the second
 one clips ticket summary when affixed if text overflows. I've been using
 `text-overflow` CSS rule , but I've noticed it does not work (at least) on
 the following browsers . if you know of a better hack , please let me know
 .

 || '''Browser''' || '''Version''' ||
 || Opera || Version (11.62) Build (1347) Platform (Linux) System (x86_64,
 2.6.32-40-generic) ||
 || Chrome || 17.0.963.79 (Developer Build 125985 Linux) Ubuntu 10.04 ||

 Patch order is as follows

 {{{
 #!sh

 $ hg qapplied
 t206/t206_r1386655_ticket_textarea_fields.diff
 t206/t206_r1394017_ticket_enum_fields.diff

 t174/t174_r1394017_ticket_scrollspy_icons.diff
 t174/t174_r1394017_ticket_scrollspy_clip.diff

 }}}

 After applying them scroll spy navigation looks like shown below

Comment (by olemis):

 much better !
 thnx

 Fact is that the current navigation between sections is something I don't
 like *ONCE* Javascript is enabled . Reasons are :

   - The order may be hard to follow e.g. links to top skip
     one section . Sometimes this makes me get lost and forget
     the actual order
   - I don't recall a single time I really used it mainly because ...
   - ... they are too far e.g. View ↑ link below in comments feed
     will be far away in long conversations .

 *IF* Javascript is enabled (<= I insist) IMO they should be always
 visible.
 In order to make it generic , small and reusable in other contexts I was
 thinking of having something like this to the right of Ticket #xxx h1

 Top ↑ | Sections | Bottom ↓

 and links to sections would be in a drop down under item in the middle
 e.g.

 Section
   Overview
   Attachments
   Change history
   Comment form
   Modify ticket

 In my thoughts , scrollspy mini-navbar is only visible when .affixed class
 is set.

 <semi-OT>
 This solution could be provided as well to be used in wiki pages as an
 alternative to wiki TOC macro . Indeed current TOC could be made sticky
 with Scrollspy support like current Bootstrap docs (jftr version 2.1.0)
 </semi-OT>

 PS: Just a suggestion ... ;)

In my opinion the ticket view should initially include the sticky panel
(including the scroll spy w/ section links) in form and size as it's
gonna be when the user scrolls down. Changing the height of the panel
when the scroll hits certain point (currently it gets increased by
including the section links) causes the browser to 'push' the ticket
content down, which is, in my opinion, a bit confusing, it'd be nice to
see a smooth transition there...
Cheers,
Jure

I agree with both your proposed changes. Not sure how to fix the jerky
clipping issue though.
We could use a CSS transform of sorts or some more involved, inelegant
handwaving:

I have raised the issue in

Incidentally, the clipping of the ticket title is also a potentially a
bit jerky. For a bit of attention to detail, would it be nice to find a
way to transition nicely between the states?

 I like that suggestion.

 [[BR]]
 The top right-area is better in my view for static information, like who
 raised the ticket and when. I would like to stay away from the dropdown
 for the section item, because it's an extra click and kind of defeats the
 purpose of scrollspy. I also believe the Bottom ↓ selector would only be
 helpful to get to the lowermost relevant element, which would be a
 'section' anyway. Same for the Top ↑, so I would drop both of those.

 I've attached a quick mockup of what my suggestion looks like.

 Once this is implemented I believe we can also drop the [# Modify ↓] and
 [# View ↑] links from the page.
