David, I'd like to write a custom authentication handler but don't know where
and how to start. Would you mind giving me some pointers and share what it
takes to write and deploy an authentication handler? Thanks.

Maybe you start here: http://sling.apache.org/documentation/the-sling-engine/authentication.html and then look at the authentication handlers we have in http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/sling/trunk/bundles/auth
