FYI, I use the following (it's in a script) before committing 3.1 updates:

$HOME/SA/spamassassin-3.1/spamassassin.raw -C $HOME/SA/spamassassin-rules/branches/3.1 -p \
$HOME/SA/spamassassin-3.1/masses/spamassassin/user_prefs --siteconfigpath \
$HOME/SA/spamassassin-3.1/masses/spamassassin/local.cf "$@"

running w/ --lint acts like the update lint (no *.pre loads).
