service returning XML

Does the following line of code establish that the return value of the SOAP
service call will be an XML DOM Element?
Is this the only thing I need to do to establish that? ... no changes
required to the deployment descriptor?

 call.setEncodingStyleURI(Constants.NS_URI_LITERAL_XML);
