DO NOT REPLY [Bug 118532] New: licensing issue between Oracle JRE and Open Source OOo

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=118532

             Bug #: 118532
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: licensing issue between Oracle JRE and Open Source OOo
    Classification: Application
           Product: Installation
           Version: OOo 3.3
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows XP
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P5
         Component: ui
        AssignedTo: of@openoffice.org
        ReportedBy: jmichae3@yahoo.com
                CC: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org

Oracle Java JRE is closed source to my best understanding. the license is not
open source for its redistributables. I don't see how it can be distributed
with OOo which is LGPL and Open Source.

It's more a legal than an 'installation' problem.

Please note that a huge amount of Apache Projects do depend on Java so this is
not really an issue. It has certainly been resolved by ASF legal

We will not ship the JRE directly but it can be a dependency and we can direct
users to the appropriate place for dowloads. This would make perfect sense
since:
- We dont maintain Java.
- We dont want to depend an a specific Java version that can cause conflicts
with other packages.

This is major problem since JRE 7 is not being recognized by OpenOffice. This
means that the database appliction is not working for me on either on a file I
already created, or try to create a new file. If you can not package the
compatible version, then you need to need to remove the dependancy on this
outside code to make your program work.

There is virtually no chance that the ASF would approve distribution GPL
artifacts, such as the JRE from the OpenJDK. Oracle does make that code base
available under other licenses, but to date not under terms that would be
acceptable for a distribution by the ASF.

As mentioned by Pedro, dependencies on a user installed JRE are acceptable.

Please read the Release Notes:
http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html#AOO3.4.1ReleaseNotes-KnownIssues

Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0 and 3.4.1 support Java 7, which is the recommended
configuration; but (especially on 64-bit Windows) you might receive warnings
about the Java version being defective. In that case, download and install the
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package

Due to this bug in Java 7, you have to install
http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/B/C/5BC5DBB3-652D-4DCE-B14A-475AB85EEF6E/vcredist_x86.exe

@Jim Michaels:

The distribution of a JRE was something that Sun and Oracle provided in their
distributions. There are Java dependencies in OOo. Of course, Sun and Oracle
were free to distribute the JRE as they saw fit.

In the forthcoming Apache OpenOffice.org releases, release of binaries
(packages and installers) are constrained differently. Whether a JRE can be
bundled or not needs to be figured out. If the ASF determines that a JRE
cannot be bundled with a binary distribution, the release will need to deal
with cases where there is no JRE already installed and the user is
unable/unwilling to install it.

Closing this bug, it's not valid. Apache OpenOffice does not distribute the JRE
as previous versions of OpenOffice
