Memory usage for canopy generation

Is there a way to estimate how much memory to allocate for running canopy
generation? I've been researching for awhile now, and I find many people
has trouble to run canopy generation because of running out java heap
space. Is there a good way to predict how much memory is required to
allocate to the heap before actually running this algorithm?
