This problem seems to have been fixed in Solr 8.3 as part of the work done in SOLR-13790.

(But it's possible I'm wrong – if any of the participating parties can still reproduce the problem they were seeing that led them to this issue, in a version of solr >= 8.3, then please feel free to re-open)
