[users@httpd] problems with .htaccess

I believe I have followed the directions on setting up basic authorization
for directory on my website (including a .htaccess file within that
directory and creating a .htpasswd file elsewhere and pointing .htaccess
to it), but when I try to access that directory, I hever receive the popup
box asking for my username and password.

I am running Apache 1.3.26 and have restarted the server after each change
I've made to either of these files.

I have also checked both the access_log and error_log and have not noted
any references to requesting a username and password. I have also made
sure the ownership and protection are set as indicated in the helpfile for
setting up basic authorization which I got from the apache.org site.

Is the problem with the following portion of my httpd.conf file?

#
# This controls which options the .htaccess files in directories can
# override. Can also be "All", or any combination of "Options",
"FileInfo",
# "AuthConfig", and "Limit"
#
#    AllowOverride None
        AllowOverride ALL
#
# Controls who can get stuff from this server.
#
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
</Directory>

<Directory "/var/apache/httpdocs">
    Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
    AllowOverride ALL
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
</Directory>

Can anyone point me in whatever direction to solve this?

Thanks!

Joe

[users@httpd] apache 2.0.45 filters

Posted by Pritpal Dhaliwal <pa...@desiest.org>.
I tried sending this message before but seems like it didn't go through.

let me try ti again:

I have created perl script which is a filter

it looks like:
cat /root/bin/popunder.pl
#!/usr/bin/perl
$input = <STDIN>;
$head = "<head>";
$popunder = "<head>\n<SCRIPT LANGUAGE='JavaScript' src='mypop.js'>
</script>";
$input =~ s/$head/$popunder/i;

print $input

permission on popunder.pl looks like
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root          228 Apr  7 18:11
/root/bin/popunder.pl

my httpd.conf looks like

ExtFilterDefine popunder mode=output intype=text/html
cmd="/root/bin/popunder.pl"

 <Location />
SetOutputFilter popunder
 </Location>

OK, so here is the deal.

I know perl script works fine. It takes the input from STDIN and prints to
STDOUT. I have tested it manually.

When is request index.html, I get nothing. That means error happend. I have
no clue where it happens. I believe popunder.pl is never being called.

At any rate, does anyone have a clue why its giving me an error.
By the way, example sed command line thing works fine, but I wanna use perl.

Thanks In Advance,
Pritpal Dhaliwal

Hello Joe:
	     Are you sure you want to AllowOverride all. For authintication
you just need:    AllowOverride AuthConfig

Because I am actually setting this up for use by another group within the
school system - it will actually be moved intact to another apache server
to which I (we) don't have direct access to.

May I ask why you are using .ht files if you have direct access to the
server?

I wish I could - that authorization popup box is not appearing - when I
click on that link which goes to that directory, the page just appears.

I don't see any problem with you. The basic authorization is supposed to
ask a valid user/password pair. Why don't you just give your user name
and password?:)
