ok, someone here told me I was running an extremely old version of SA (2.55) so 
I tried to upgrade this to 2.64. I fetched the tar and untard to a folder and 
run:

perl Makefile.PL
make 

after this step I get the following error:
'Mail-SpamAssassin-2.64]# make Makefile:94: *** missing separator.  Stop.'

any ideas comments or suggestions?
