update attempts failing

When I got to HELP and drop down for check for updates, there is a failure to connect to check for updates.

This is a known issue. Current version of Apache OpenOffice is 4.1.6 - 
if you wish to upgrade to that version please visit 
http://www.openoffice.org/download/
