Apache Financial Services

Hi everyone:

I've started putting together a series of examples of component based
systems as part of an overall tutorial. The first suite of examples is
called "Apache Financial Service".

  http://avalon.apache.org/sandbox/merlin/starting/examples/afs/

This currently contains a demo Bank and a demo Servlet that uses the
bank component. The first cut on the Bank is woefully pathetic - one
component and a serializable list of accounts (that's why is under a the
directory name "simple"). What I would like to do is to extend the
example under a series of implementations.

Here is a breakdown of the different examples and what they could provide:

* simple

  A simplistic bank implementation together with
  a related web application (possibly using something
  like Struts) to demonstrate component and service
  management inside a web-service environment.

* basic

  A better implementation that deals with a more complex
  component model - e.g. adding accounts and plug-in
  business service as dynamically resolved components,
  plus extensions to a parallel web-layer that shows
  the additional functionality.

* distributed

  A examples of a distributed service solution where a
  account can be held in one JVM, communicates with a
  agency on another JVM, which invokes transactions with
  a bank on a third JVM. This particular example could
  get into a bunch of interesting stuff related to
  (a) security, and (b) distributed service discovery.

I'm interested in hearing about other suggestions for example content
that people would like to see. Also it would be fantastic is people
with knowledge on stuff like Struts and other more web-faced
technologies like Cocoon could hack into the presentation side - I would
love to see this evolve as a good example of a web applications.

All comments, ideas, thoughts, etc. encouraged.

Cheers, Steve.
