Tomcat stalls periodically

I compiled and tested 5 servlets each of which uses a connection pool of inital 
size 5 (connecting to MySQL). They all worked fine. When I added the sixth one, 
the response was very slow and the request eventually timed out. Now, none of 
the servlets load. This happend recently and I had to restart tomcat. But I 
can't keep doing that. MySQL has max_connections set to 100, so I dont think 
thats the problem.
