Running the Makefile.PL in mod_perl with the --enable-module=so option would 
result in the error env: LD_RUN_PATH file or directory not found

achieved success by configuring mod_perl into the apache source tree and then 
running the apache ./configure with all the appropriate options.  Apache 1.3.26 
just doesn't want to configure and make from mod_perl for some reason.
