After invoking {{release:prepare}}, the first lines of my pom.xml file are changed from this:

I'd prefer it if the release plugin would leave the file's line wrapping alone.

I agree with the above, however I only wrap the first tag over two similarly long lines. In addition the release:prepare step modifies the SCM section changing indentation in some cases. It may do other bad things too, but MRELEASE-814 is blocking me from finding out at this time.
