Ah, let me change it to reduce confusion.

Hopefully it's enough to put metrics more on a diet to stop what I call "metrics pollution" (excessive metrics) – lazy-load default plugins SOLR-14394, don't track "distrib" metrics for request handlers that don't even work in that mode SOLR-14401, both of which I think are better investments in time then completely disabling, which is maybe an over-reaction to the current state of affairs.

-That is useful, but let us also have some way to disable it completely. It will help with performance benchmarking to gauge the overhead cost of metrics.-
