Introduction

Hi,

my name's Robin Fowler and I'm currently based in the UK. I love doing graphic design and thought this would be a good opportunity to contribute. I'm mainly interested in marketing and UI design.

I have read through the introduction modules and have signed up on the CWiki, and I have some questions but will hold back with them in case I'm asking at the wrong place (perhaps someone can give me a hint).

Regards,
Robin

before we start voting on the logos I would suggest that we define some
basic rules and a timeline (when to start, how long the vote is open
etc.). We have some very interesting and good proposals but in the end
only one can make it. We should also consider a complete brand, means a
proposal that can be applied everywhere (logo, file icons and app icon,
webpage, intro, about, ...)

Just my opinion

I have edited the wiki , giving numbers to all the logos. So all of us can
have a look and vote as follows giving the ranking. Kinldy use alphabets
for ranking meaning A as the best, B next one and Z the last.

Ok i've added the updated logo to the wiki (thanks for the info Rob).

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.x+-+Logo+Explorations

Personally I would avoid too much of the 'gloss' effect, i think it's been so overused on the web and i prefer it a bit more matte myself. But I can make a version with a bit more shine if you like just to see how it compares.

Hi Robin,

I see your logo designs and I am very impressed. This is some fine
work. The wiki is open for anyone to edit, once you create an
account. As you see now there is a page where we have been collecting
AOO 4.0 logo proposals. That is a good place to add yours.

One of the perils of graphical design work in a community-based
project like this is the tendency for what we call "bikeshedding".
I'd recommend you, and everyone else, read this page:

http://bikeshed.com/

It is something to be aware of. We cannot really prevent it, but with
awareness we can temper it somewhat. But it is important that you,
as a designer, realize the tendency toward this, in projects like
this. Otherwise it is easy to feel frustrated at prolonged
discussions, contradictory feedback and lack of resolution. We don't
want that to happen.

I'm not saying this is occurring now, but it is natural that if you
ask 10 people for their opinions on a logo, you will get 10 different
views.

Keep up the good work, and be prepared for a lot of feedback!

-Rob

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll incorporate the requests soon. Should I send the result in a mail or just upload it to the wiki? (or both? still a bit confused here)

Hi,
thanks for the feedback. I've made a version with medium sized text and smaller text. The problem I see with the small text is that when scaled down it is a little small for reading (you can see in the comparison image). There would have to be different logos for different sizes in this case i think. My personal preference is the medium size.

I actually like the feather, its the white gulls and the apache feather's
shape. Symbolically its strong.
Something we could adopt for the website design, not particularly for the
icon or logo. ie a background for start up screen etc.

Dear Mr. Robin,

The one with the feather looks better. Can you reduce the size of the
OpenOffice 4 by half and even less so that the image becomes prominent. Can
you make an image with AOO4?

Re: Logo Design (v4)

Robin:

As you have mentioned the middle one is the best. Just have a look at the
existing logo. It has a shine. Try to introduce the same in this one also.
You have added a book to denote writer. Can you change the second page as a
table to denote calc? And rotate the image, reduce the size of the top
bird, so that it will give a perspective feel.

I like this flying image and that it has more than one wings - motion.

I have zero to do with deciding the logo, but if I did this one would covey
what I fee; about Open Office - you can fly with it. Microsoft Office is
bogging workers down. Open Office lets you FLY. I was a long time user of
Office and Word Perfect Office. Open Office is better than both of them for
99% of all computer users.

This logo conveys what I want to see about Open Office - that you can fly.
You are not held down by bloated, expensive software.

Now, if you guys would just make a mobile version ....

Logo Design (v4)

Posted by Robin Fowler <ro...@outlook.com>.
Ok so this what i've made, I'm sending two different versions, one with the feather and one without. The gulls are aligned to form the shape of a book (hence the text). The Font is the Bitstream Vera font. I didn't spend much time on the feather, it's one of the things i will work on some more. The reason i didn't use the apache brand feather is simply that it doesn't really fit the design. I'm happy to make some changes if there's any requests.

Re: Introduction

Mr. Robin,

The openoffice.org needs a complete overhaul, right from the logo. The site
needs to be attractive since we have no other inducement to keep the
visitors to stay on the website like free offers, gifts etc. If you have
any design, post it here so that eveybody can see.

(If the attachment is large, the server may reject the mail. Then you can
post it at some site and send the link. Or send the details to me and I
will upload the file and place the link here.

With Warm Regards

Re: Introduction

Posted by Robin Fowler <ro...@outlook.com>.
Ok thanks for the clarification. My first question:

I had a look around for something I'd like to do and came across the logo design concepts for version 4. I've made a design and was wondering if I just go ahead and edit the page (on CWiki), adding my design or do i send the design to someone who is responsible for editing the page? I guess I'm looking for some kind of general guidelines for the CWiki..

The other question is regarding the website, what is the approach to working on this, is it preferable to do minor improvements or could i go ahead and make an entire overhaul? Are there some guidelines for this or is it completely up to the individual?

Thanks for your help!

Robin

This is the marketing mailing list. So it is a great place to ask
questions. We don't currently have a separate list for graphics or
UI. If it is related to marketing, branding, logos, promotional
artwork, etc., then we discuss it on this list. If we're talking

discuss it on the dev mailing lis (dev@openoffice.apache.org).
