Hurray!! Are you going to fix it?
I've been begging to implement it for couple of months now and even send an
implementation for this features to the mailing list. It is trivial but if
it might save a little time for you I could send it again

Sorry for the slow response.  I confess that I don't always read the
xerces-j-user list.  The setAttribute method is probably the right place
to implement this feature, but it has not been implemented.
