I will attach an example file where this failure results in a minute. Basically it happens when there is a carriage return after a comment. We get the following error message:
[23:31:35] WARN [org.apache.directory.shared.ldap.ldif.LdifReader] - The ldif file is empty

My bad had a maven hickup where old jars were being downloaded. Please excuse the false alarm.
