Turning HACKING into a .html file?
Would anyone object if I turned HACKING into www/hacking.html, and
left a pointer in the old file? While the old-school aesthetics of
the plaintext are wonderfully cozy, and I know we'll always feel a
certain nostalgia for it, it's, y'know, hard to refer to specific
sections directly.

I have no idea what I would do differently for lynx. I was planning
to format HACKING in the same way as other pages on our web site (say,
faq.html). If you know of specific problems this creates for lynx,
please describe them.
Thanks,

Please make it readable in lynx if you do. I am sure you would anyway.

Ah, interesting. It seems that your browser doesn't interpret
"monospace" as "whichever fixed-pitch font is the default".

tigris.css includes
code, pre {
font-family: 'Andale Mono', Courier, monospace;
}
It's all gobbledegook to me, but if I delete that bit my problem goes
away.

If I choose to view hacking.html using style "None" rather than style
"Default" that also causes a fixed width font to be used for <pre>.
If I create a very simple HTML page then <pre> does use a fixed width
font. My simple HTML page has a very basic embedded style and it
doesn't stop the fxied width font being used.

Does HTML specify fonts?. My browser does respect the line breaks,

I have determined that it is the "always use these fonts" option.
Although I have a fixed-width font as one of "these fonts" it's
not used for a <pre>.

I thought <pre> tags were supposed to give fixed-width font? I don't
think I've ever had a browser not show them in fixed-width. Certainly
in my Mozilla Firefox 1.0.2 right now they're fixed. Are you sure you
don't have some wonky setting in your browser?

On the live website my browser shows all the code samples in a
variable width font. I think that's a bit of a regression. One or
two things are presented in a fixed width font, but they are in <tt>
tags not <pre> tags.

Yes, that's what the phrase "left a pointer in the old file" above
means (and that's what I did).

I think you should add a notice to the top of HACKING to say, "HACKING
is now maintained as www/hacking.html" (or something), because some
people may get the source and see HACKING, and not realise that it's now
in www.
