Ok, the original poster messed up by reporting two different problems in the
same bug report, one wich was a simple matter of RTFM. The second problem
however, is real.
If you have a apache config with no ServerName set (for example a stock redhat
apache installation) you get the confusing error message "Invalid virtual host
name". This needs to be fixed (if apache can figure out a reasonable default
value for the hostname, so should mod_webapp) or at the very least, the error
message should be a bit more informative. Perhaps, 'for now, mod_webapp needs to
have the ServerName directive set correctly'
