[STATUS] OpenEJB Plugin Development

Hi OpenEJB fellows,

I am on vacation and hence got some time to work on development
stuff etc.. I already setup a couple of FreeBSD VMs and Windows
VMs as test environments over here :)

I'd like to summarize the status of the OpenEJB plugin development
to refresh our memory. Additionally I'd like to define action items
where appropriate.

Wiki access for Jonathan Gallimore:
-----------------------------------
AFAIK know the pending issue here was that Jon needs to submit
a CLA by fax or postal mail which he did. Jon, could you be so kind
and double check whether you did send the CLA already. David B. and
I were not able to find your CLA on file. Maybe, if you sent a
facsimile you could glimpse through the records of sent facsimiles
of your fax machine regarding whether the CLA facsimile did yield
some kind of error.

If this action item has been solved you should be all set regarding
writing a wiki article about the OpenEJB Eclipse plugin.

Generic design for a plugin foundation infrastructure:
------------------------------------------------------
I once suggested to generalize most of the plugin stuff into something
I called OpenEJB Plugin Foundations. I will be looking into IDEA
IntelliJ till end of may to figure out how plugins are done in IntelliJ.

After that I think it would be possible to refactor the current plugin
logic into a more generic module that can be re-used by both an Eclipse
and an IntelliJ plugin for OpenEJB.

Cheers
Daniel S. Haischt

Jon,

successfully added openejb-674-19.diff at revision 658955. I decided to
not add the IntelliJ support for now. Hope that's okay...

I really like the commons idea. We could for example provide an Ant task
or Maven extension that is executing the EJB annotation stuff.

Cheers

Hi,

I've attached openejb-674-19.diff and openejb-674-19-with-idea.diff to
Jira OPENEJB-674 (the latter is just shows the Idea plugin I created, as
discussed below. I'm not sure it should be checked in).

I think that's a good idea. We also always intended to produce a command
line version which just outputted what needed to be done, so the
refactoring to a common module is definitely worthwhile.

I'd say the IDEA plugin is at least as good as (and probably better
than) my efforts. I'll separate the IDEA stuff I've done into a
separate patch and submit it, and you can try it and judge for yourself ;-)

We could try to figure out whether Netbeans does not have support to
generate EJB3 annotations. That way your efforts would still be of use
for people not using eclipse.

Is the IntelliJ annotation support exactly doing what your code does?
Or would there be room for improvement?

For the IDEA disappoinment :), I think you can refactor your code so
we have two main components, one which deals with common - standard -
EJB3 annotations - which IDEA already support - and the other
component is related to generating OpenEJB specific artifcats, then
you can add the OpenEJB specific code to be used with the IDEA
component.

Hint - Something I've learned from my own mistakes:

Always use the same user ID everywhere within ASF

You should be all setup! Added you to the asf-cla group which should
give you access to our spaces and any other that allow write
permissions to that group.

Hi Jonathan,

I think your work on eclipse has been tremendous. We certainly lacked
expertise in this area and you have filled the hole extremely well.

I know this thread might not be the place for it, so I am sending a separate
email for a feature request in the eclipse plugin

Wow, I'm all excited :-)

Seriously though, if anyone does have any criticism, or suggestions for
improvements I can make, please do let me know, I'm always looking to
improve.

I realise most of the work I've contributed so far has been around the
Eclipse plugin. I definitely want to get involved in the main core of the
project as well, so my next step was going to be to sign up for some of the
un-assigned examples and itests that need doing (OPENEJB-342, OPENEJB-453 &
OPENEJB-142). If there's something else that I can help with, please let me
know (and I'll keep my eye on Jira and the user list too!).

In terms of my feedback to the project, its all positive really, everyone
here has been so welcoming - thank you!

To me, I feel its been fairly straight forward to get into the community, as
there are pretty regular mails with information on how to get involved, and
everyone is so helpful.

A couple of times, I've also had personal e-mails offering lots of
encouragement - many thanks for those, they've always come at the right time
and given me huge boost.

I enjoy the work I do for OpenEJB hugely, so thank you all for having me,
and I look forward to contributing further! :-)

Cheers

Jon

I've done some refactoring to create a plugins-common module, and also
made a start on an IDEA plugin. I did however (after getting a basic
plugin working) discover that IDEA 7 already has a feature to generate
EJB3 annotations (its on the right click menu on the XML editor when
ejb-jar.xml is open) - I'm sure you can imagine my disappointment!

I was going to submit two patches, one with the refactoring to the
common module, and one with the work I've done in Idea already, (I guess
we need to decide whether to continue with this in light of finding this
feature in IDEA 7).

I'll try and get these patches into Jira this evening.

Cheers,

Jon
