ZIP distribution or installation program?
Hi all,
Given messsages like
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=fop-user&m=105689746128501&w=2
should we provide the FOP distributions as ZIP files too?
Then there's also
http://www.izforge.com/izpack/
(GPL)
If somebody could have a look at it and post a short review...
A really interesting idea would be to convince the Greater
Federation, or at least the Java part, to build on some
graphical installer, as CygWin does for ages. This should
really cut down redundant jar downloads, and we could even
integrate Jimi/JAI/JCE downloads without much legal issues,
because the graphical installer would show the shrink-wrap
licenses and ask the user for agreement.

The dist target already creates ZIPs and I actually don't why
we only do .tgz distributions ;-)

I'll mention it to the PMC to see if there is consensus to take it to
the Borad. I've been thinking a little about how the "management"
structure can become more proactive in what is the essentially reactive
environment of Open Source. One way is to try to whip up enthusiasm for
projects or extensions to existing projects that the PMC or Board
considers necessary for the health of Apache.

FWIW, I think this and your earlier suggestion along these lines are
excellent ideas. Ease of installation and configuration need to be
given a high profile in Apache projects. As always, resourcing is the
problem.

I can't see from the overview page how this helps here any more
than Maven does.
Gump and Maved have dependency information, this is a good start.
What is needed is a small GUI installer similar to Cygwin setup,
only slightly better:
- Present a nice form for entering connection data by the user
(especially proxy setup) and perhaps for other preferences
- Manage persistent connection data and preferences
- Manage the mirror list
- Present a nice wizard to choose packages to download, keep an eye
on dependencies
- Tell the user about the download size
- Let the user choose downloading optional non-apache packages
- Present licenses for non-apache packages
- Perhaps manage which licenses the user already has agreed (does
somebody know of a case where a user did *not* agree to a license?)
- Provide for canceling and temporary suspending a download
- Manage partial downloads
- Manage downloaded packages in order to avoid downloading the same
or a compatible package twice
- Update classpath settings, config files, build properties and
whatnot, as necessary

Remember the discussions about ASF repository reorganisation on
community@? Maybe the Gump, Maven and Krysalis Centipede guys have ideas
related to this. Also keep an eye on Krysalis Version
(http://www.krysalis.org/version) that's providing a little bit of base
functionality in this region. Just my 0.02 CHF.

It depends on how the whole beast works and which exceptions
are made by the overall licensing. If you compile a C program
with gcc, the executable isn't covered by the GPL despite quite
a bit of FSF code goes into the result. The auxillary files
which have to be linked are explicitely not GPL.
If the installer works vaguely similar, we might be able to
use it.

Perhaps a good idea--will Gump do this for
us?--Cocoon, Axis, Xalan, and Struts are all supplying
both ZIP and TAR formats.

Errr...I wouldn't know for sure here, and am looking
forward to being enlightened on this--but when you
distribute anything with a GPL doesn't that require
the rest of the app to be GPL as well? Even the LGPL
is a not permitted for Apache apps, correct?
