[VOTE] Add Bolt as a New Backend to Apache Gluten
Hi Gluten community,
Following the renewed discussion, no additional concerns have been raised.
I would therefore like to start a vote on whether to accept Bolt as an
optional backend in Apache Gluten. PR #12454
<https://github.com/apache/gluten/pull/12454> contains the proposed
implementation.
Bolt has been deployed at large scale across multiple ByteDance product
lines and validated on more than one million Spark jobs per day. The
current Bolt contributors will take primary responsibility for the
day-to-day maintenance of Bolt-specific code, including compatibility
updates, documentation, testing, and issue resolution. All changes,
including those under backends-bolt/, will continue to follow the normal
Gluten contribution and review process.
Bolt contributors will provide and maintain the CI resources required for
the Bolt backend and will investigate Bolt-specific CI failures. After each
PR is merged into the bytedance/bolt
<https://github.com/bytedance/bolt> repository,
Bolt CI will check out the latest Gluten main branch and run the Bolt
backend unit tests against it to detect compatibility issues early.
The required shared-module changes were split into five backend-neutral PRs
and have been merged into Gluten main, as tracked in issue #12456
<https://github.com/apache/gluten/issues/12456>. The current PR focuses on
the Bolt-specific implementation and its build, test, documentation, and CI
integration. The related LEGAL-729
<https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-729> issue is closed.

Please vote:
- +1: approve adding Bolt as an optional backend
- 0: no opinion
- -1: object to the proposal; please provide a technical justification
This vote will remain open for at least 72 hours.

CI first: #12288 is still open about bringing our GHA usage down, and
adding Bolt will likely make that tighter -- worth thinking ahead about
how
we handle it.
The other is maintenance. Once Bolt lands, most core changes will touch
more than one backend, so we'll probably end up @-ing people a lot. Could
you name a few shepherds and key co-authors for Bolt (a CODEOWNERS entry
would do)? Then anyone touching core can request review from them up

Thanks for pushing this forward and addressing the feedback from the
previous vote.
A key concern previously raised was minimizing the operational and
engineering burden on Velox developers. This PR delivers a clean
abstraction layer that effectively decouples Velox and Bolt from the
ClickHouse backend while refactoring the existing Velox backend
architecture. The implementation aligns well with our vision for a
maintainable, extensible codebase, and I'm very happy with the final
state
of these changes.
Great job on this effort!

Hi Jacky:
1. CI for Bolt will be disabled upon initial merge. We will enable it only
after the CI infrastructure machines are fully provisioned.
2, You can ping @taiyang-li @zhli1142015. They will act as the shepherds
and key co‑authors for Bolt.

+1 (binding). Two things I'd like to check though.
CI first: #12288 is still open about bringing our GHA usage down, and
adding Bolt will likely make that tighter -- worth thinking ahead about how
we handle it.
The other is maintenance. Once Bolt lands, most core changes will touch
more than one backend, so we'll probably end up @-ing people a lot. Could
you name a few shepherds and key co-authors for Bolt (a CODEOWNERS entry
would do)? Then anyone touching core can request review from them up front
and confirm the Bolt side, instead of guessing who to ping.

Re: [VOTE] Add Bolt as a New Backend to Apache Gluten
Posted by felix f <bi...@gmail.com>.
+1.
The implementation aligns well with our vision for a
maintainable, extensible codebase, and I'm very happy with the final state
of these changes.
Great job on this effort!
