free (as in beer) mac client?

Hello, can you recommend a free (no money) svn mac client?

I need it for a friend of mine who is not a programmer, although he is
quite keen with computers. We only need to share a text file, no
coding involved.

SmartSVN has been around for awhile. Looks like 6.5 final was released today. But note that this is not a Mac-only program; it's cross-platform, an attribute which in my experience tends to make software less lovely on any platform than if it had been designed specifically for that platform. I don't know if that applies specifically to SmartSVN, but it seems to be true of software generally.

When I glanced at Versions when it first came out, it seemed to be a very Mac-like (and Mac-only) Subversion client, but it is not free.

I'm afraid I exclusively use the svn command line client on my Mac, so I don't have much advice for you in selecting a GUI. But I find the CLI just fine for interacting with Subversion. Sometimes I also reach for a web-based repository viewer to browse the repository or research its history.

Hiya,

I've literally just seen this come up on my twitter feed - might be of

svn is free and already include on Leopard and Snow Leopard macs. Granted it is the CLI implementation. If you are looking for a graphical client then this of course won't do.

Might I suggest DropBox.com? You can set up shared folders in dropbox so they are synced among multiple people. The service is free up to 2GB of data.

Are you simply sharing a file, and you're using Subversion to do that?

I'm making two recommendations: Dropbox and Pathfinder

DROPBOX
=========

If you really don't need a full configuration management system, I too
would highly recommend you use Dropbox (http://dropbox.com).

It's not free in the Open Source sense, but it is free as in the "Free
as in Beer" sense. Dropbox works on Windows, Linux (under both GNU and
KDE graphical environments), Mac, and there's even a native iPhone
app. So, you can share flles between a wide variety of platforms.

Dropbox is dead simple to use. You download Dropbox onto your computer
and subscribe to a Dropbox account. Dropbox creates a "Dropbox" folder
on your computer. (%USERPROFILE\My Documents\My Dropbox on Windows
systems, $HOME/dropbox on Unix and Macs). Any file placed into that
folder will be copied to the Dropbox server and to any computer that's
also subscribed to that Dropbox account.

Even better, you can share folders between Dropbox accounts, so you
and your friend can share a folder. You place something in this folder
in your account, and your friend will get it in his account.

Dropbox also versions files placed in the Dropbox folder and even
stores deleted file, so if someone deletes a file, you can retrieve
it, and you can retrieve older versions of files.

Dropbox integrates nicely with Finder on the Mac, so control-clicking
the mouse will show some Dropbox items in the drop-down context menu.

I use Dropbox quite heavily for collaboration and for sharing files
between myself and members of my family. It beats emailing stuff back
and forth and is more secure too. (Dropbox uses SSL while email
doesn't normally use encryption).

Plus, Dropbox is extremely easy to use since all you have to do is
merely move files into and out of the Dropbox folder (and not delete
the .dropbox folder in your $HOME directory).

PATHFINDER
==========

If you truly need a full version control system, have your friend try
Pathfinder. Pathfinder is a Finder replacement and is well worth the
$40 cost. (Okay this isn't Free as in Beer or Open Source).

Pathfinder has a built in terminal, so you can quickly drop down into
command line mode without opening another program. It allows you to
copy and paste files between directories, and it has a dual pane mode
which shows you multiple directories at the same time. The file
browser also allows you to use multiple tabs, and other neat features
that should have been incorporated into Finder.

More importantly, Pathfinder also has a built in Subversion client, so
you can use Pathfinder's Finder-like file browser to interface with
Subversion.

As I mentioned before, this is not Free as in Beer, but many people
buy Pathfinder even if they don't use the built-in Subversion client.
So, tell your friend that if he buys Pathfinder, Cocoatech will throw
in the built-in Subversion client for free. (Hey, it worked for
Ronco.)

For a TortoiseSVN like GUI tool there is:

SCPlugin - http://scplugin.tigris.org (but if your buddy is using Snow
Leopard, it won't work.)

For a GUI tool period...

svnX -
http://www.lachoseinteractive.net/en/community/subversion/svnx/features/
RapidSVN - http://rapidsvn.tigris.org/

Hope this helps,

Johnathan

Thanks to all who replied, all your messages were quite meaningful to me.

I suggested this to my friend right after reading my message. The fact
that it is classified as "multiplatform" did not sound reliable to me,
I did not know what it meant, and specially which dependencies it had.
I wonder why they hide it is developed in java. Now he is already
updating and committing easily (he had already tried tortoisesvn).

I had been wondering for quite a long time if such services existed.
VCSs are not as easy to install and use as they claim, specially for
non computer-people, but also sometimes for some IT professionals.
Their video introduction is fine, but I miss some technical details
somewhere else.

not much :)

actually I already mentioned we had tried that svnx but didn't manage
to have it work successfully when the server asks for some
interactivity such as dealing with SSL certificates (https://) and
user authentication (svn://). is this a bug or non-implementation or
perhaps we missed something?

Me too I just use the linux CLI with a diff viewer (kdiff3 / tkdiff).
Then he should configure a diff viewer for mac. Not trivial for linux.

I do hope there was a --using option for svn diff, like in bzr (I may
start a thread for that, it's been on my head for months/years).

A very insightful mail, David.

You start with an interesting question.

1) I am kind of an svn freak, I use svn for many things, not just for
programming. I even chose my personal ISP (geekisp.com) because it
offers it (besides ssh)

2) For this "project" I am using svn for other things, such as a
crontab script that updates its wc and performs some operations with
it. I guess there are other alternatives for not bugging my friend
with svn, but it's not that bad.

I will definitely try dropbox.

Your description of pathfinder is much better than the one from the
guy who maintains and sells it. I really got lost trying to understand
why should I buy that.

Thanks.
