potential new Lucene logo
I'm not sure if this is the correct list, but here goes...
I've done a fair amount of logo design over the years, and have
within the last year done several wiki sites like CommunityWiki
(which is currently down), and projects like Topic Maps for Java
(TM4J) and XML Topic Maps (XTM). I thought I'd have a go at the
Lucene logo, not to change it markedly but clean it up so that it
is based on an existing font. This potential Lucene logo is based
on an ITC font called Magneto Bold Extended, which you can see here:
http://www.identifont.com/show?72W
I modified the 'c' slightly because at small sizes it starts
looking too much like an 'e', especially since in the Lucene
logo the baseline is extended across the entire logo. I experimented
with several border thicknesses, settling on one that was visible
at small sizes but not too thick at larger sizes. Here's a sample
of the result:
http://www.altheim.com/murray/img/lucene-20b-320w.jpg
I've posted a zip file containing a number of sizes plus the
originals, which are in SVG and PNG:
http://www.altheim.com/murray/img/lucene_logo.zip (198K)
The SVG file is the source image, and after conversion into a
raster format I did some bit hand cleaning to end up with the
PNG, which is a 9394x961px image at 72dpi. Being available as
a very large PNG, it can then be used for T-shirts, etc. I
consider the PNG image the master, since it's had some cleanup
in evening out lines and curves, etc.
The one thing about the logo (either the existing one or the
one I've done) is that neither do too well when shrunk small.
The source PNG can be reduced to any size, but after reduction
to small sizes often needs some hand cleanup. This could be
fixed by no longer using an outline around the font, but I
didn't want to take that kind of liberty with the design,
especially since then it would be a single-colour font. I kinda
like the current design, as it reminds me of a logo from a
recreational vehicle (camper, caravan, etc.)
I am currently a bit too busy to do much more than I've already
done, but I thought I'd post the files to the group.
I realize that sometimes people feel (understandably) proprietary
about a given image, and I don't mean to push this image on anyone.
If the group wants to use it, I'm fine with that, and release any
rights on its use. I'll leave the zip file online for several
weeks, then it will be removed.

Ricardo,
No, actually, that's not the problem. The issue is that the logo
has too many small details that when shrunk down become less than
a pixel or so in definition. I can take the SVG version of the
logo I've done and shrink it, but it won't look good too small,
with the black border lines of the logo becoming smaller than a
single pixel. Also, because the primary colour of the logo is a
very light green, if the border disappears the logo almost does
too on a white background.

And to answer Erik's request, that wouldn't be too difficult if
the logo still looks similar to the one we have now. If we moved
towards more of a meatball logo (i.e., like NASA, a ball-shaped
one) that wouldn't be possible.

I agree that the logo wasn't scalable without loosing quality or
redability.
That is the problem with raster/bitmap images (i don't know the word).
An image in SVG solve that problem (as you allready posted).
If that is what you intend to do then you just have to make the logo
more readable as it was sugested.

Ricardo,
I agree in theory with what you've said, but I didn't feel it was
my place to completely alter the identity of the existing logo.
I've not been involved in this project that long (several months)
and don't know how attached people are to the existing logo, or
how much it's in use. So I felt the safest thing was to come up
with a cleanup, not a reinvention. I agree with some of the earlier
comments about it being too long, and that's easily fixed. My
biggest problem as a graphic artist (which is actually how I
started into the computer field back in the early 80's) is that
the existing logo doesn't decompose well at small sizes. It's hard
to make a "badge" of it, the kind one sees at the bottom of a web
page. If I were to reinvent the logo, I'd try something more bold,
and something that still was recognizable at 80x30 pixels. I may
have time post-Christmas to make some attempts at this if people
are interested. I spent quite a lot of time on CommunityWiki
building up a logo, and probably developed at least several dozen
alternatives over several weeks. I'd not want to repeat that kind
of effort, but the community involvement was very good.
(Unfortunately, CommunityWiki's server has been down for awhile,
so I can't point you to it.)

Ricardo,
Thanks. As I mentioned to Mark, I don't have any plans to spend
any further time on the logo, and provided some reasons for not
making any further changes. Note that the second logo in the
sample image is not a second logo, it is intended to fulfill Erik's
request for the ability to create
< L u u u u u u cene >
for search results.
If you wish to change the background of the ellipse, the SVG file
is provided in the zip archive. The colours can be changed to
whatever is appropriate for a given situation.

I like the first of the three in the png, but i think that you should
change the "e" to make it different than the "c", the "c" is ok but the
"e" is not very readable.
Try to close the "e" a little bit more or even completly.
The meatball is also nice but i tink that you should change the
background of the ellipsis.

The third design is not meant at a separate logo, it's an
application of the first design. If you think about how
logos are used, they are often done in positives, negatives,
multi-colour, bordered, unbordered, etc. The third design
is meant for T-shirts and things. It probably wouldn't
work very well as a design in its own right.
Some logos have a specified colour, perhaps as part of of
a company colour scheme (think IBM's blue or Sun's purple),
others do not. I think of the first design as the proposed
logo, and it doesn't have much colour at all so that it is
more versatile. The colour that it does have decomposes well
to greyscale.
Before I would close up the 'e's I would be sure that nobody
would ever want to use the logo along with the base font,
Magneto Bold. If I close up the 'e' it will no longer look
like Magneto, and will look decidedly wrong next to it. In
other logos I've done there has been a strong requirement
that there be an associated font so that stationery, letterheads
and other graphics can match. I'd be very wary of changing the
'e' (and frankly I don't agree that it's an issue -- Magneto
is a very popular font by a reputable font house, and sells
well. If it were that hard to discern between 'e' and 'c' that
wouldn't be the case).

Hello Murray,
Thanks for doing this and contributing. Changing the logo is not an
urgent or even needed, but it looks like there are issues with it, so
it would be nice to fix it up the way you started.
The 3rd version with green oval looks nice to me. I'd still close the
'e's and clean up the pale green colour between letters. The black
font version seems too boring (I'm wearing all black today and I think
I made a boring choice this morning). The green is better, but maybe
the oval ruins the 60s look (not sure, I was still just a concept in
the 60s). It's sunny in NYC today, so I'm feeling bright, happy,
energetic and all that. Maybe some stronger, happy colour that looks
good on white?
Thanks,
Otis

Erik et al,
Okay. I got terrifically bored fixing bugs and whipped up a new
version that is based on Magneto Bold rather than Magneto Bold
Extended. It's narrower and I've changed the way the letters run
into each other, used the same hue as the existing logo for an
underlining but changed the base letter colour to black, and also
provided a meatball version, good for caps and T-shirts. The master
is in cleaner-than-last-time SVG, there's a huge PNG built from
that as a master (with no cleanup this time, it's just a better
SVG to begin with), plus a sample:
http://www.altheim.com/murray/img/lucene-master-10pct.png
with the zip (400K) at
http://www.altheim.com/murray/img/lucene-logo.zip
With the SVG available it's easy to changes sizes and/or colours,
so it can be resized, turned into a negative, whatever.
And again, I give up rights to the group (just to make that public).

In my opinion if you want to change the lucene logo make a new one. The
one posted is almost the same than the original.
Murray, discussions are good because people participate and bring new
ideas. Your time would be better spend if you create a new (diferent) logo.
I people don't like it they will have to say why or give some ideas and
that would help to make better logo.
This is just what i think,

I'm not intending to put any fuss about this, but it's relatively
simple to either change the aspect ratio of the current logo, or
push the characters closer together. Changing the 'e' would be a
bit more difficult, but not really a problem either. I could do
this towards the mid- to latter part of next week if people were

Me too... I think the "e" in the new font is unreadable, and the new
logo is too angular, the old one is more rotund at the edges, and the
old "n" provides a nice break in the baseline...
OTOH, I always had this (intended, according to Doug) impression that
the original logo belongs to the 60' era, and denotes something
outdated, old. So perhaps this is a good opportunity to bring it into
the new era... :

I'm sorry, but I prefer the orig. The new one seems too elongated to me.

Thanks! This looks nice to me.

I just put the original, scalable artwork for the existing logo at:
http://jakarta.apache.org/lucene/lucene.eps
I have used the Gimp in the past to generate high-resolution PNG files
from this when needed.

The design was originally donated by Jeff Boozer and Joy Busse in April
of 1998. I asked for something that looked like 60's refrigerator chrome.

I don't feel too proprietary. Do folks prefer Murray's reworked Lucene
logo or the original logo?
