This is an issue in the underlying JSON library that we're using.  Jansson doesn't support NUL bytes in JSON string values.  They have an [open issue|https://github.com/akheron/jansson/pull/63] for this, but it hasn't been updated in awhile.  If this gets merged into Jansson, then we can update the version that we have embedded in the Avro C library source, and then this error would go away.

The alternative would be to switch to a different JSON library, though that would be a pretty invasive change.
