'global' elimination

As part of cleaning up the code some, I'm getting rid of the global
variables.  I've made the first commit in CVS, and checked that things
still work, but only superficially.

This is the part where the 'many people testing out the code' part of
open source comes in handy - hopefully everything works, but I also
hope that if something doesn't, it will be reported promptly.
