The log4j.conf file is basically ignored.
See: http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/usermanual/get-started.html#logging
and jmeter.properties for details on how to configure the logging
system.
Output goes to jmeter.log by default.

What about the log4j.conf under 'bin' directory when downloading
jmeter_source?
Any other logging system?

AFAIK JMeter does not use log4j (except that I think httpclient can be
configured to use log4j)
I think it may have used log4j a long time ago.
