mod_webapp, mod_auth's , and Turbine 2.1

Does anyone have any experience setting up Tomcat 4.0.1 with mod_webapp 
and apache authentication, so that it would be possible to getRemoteUser 
() from the request within Turbine?  I know this isn't the prettiest way 
to do things but it is what I have to work with.  I thought it would be 
pretty straight forward:

data.getRequest ().getRemoteUser ()

but I just get null's when I do it this way.  Any thoughts?  Am I 
missing something obvious?
