Adding a STARTDOC token and an ENDDOC token to an empty XMLObject instance

I need to create an empty XMLObject instance and populate it through an associated XmlCursor instance.
Before being able to insert an element, I have ta add a STARTDOC token and I can't find in the doc how to do it.
Could anyone please tell me how to do ?
