Yes. I'm planning to work on this specific issue separately and before  KAFKA-1589.
Hopefully I'll have a new version of the patch (with working systests) ready by the end of this week.

btw. Zookeeper 3.4.5 does not have the bug that prevents systests from working, so we can keep that as a less preferred option.
