how do I make an alias?

I'm having a problem getting something like <img src="/images/x.jpg"> to
work in my Java Server Page.  The page can't seem to find the images.  I'm
thinking the browser interprets the link as being relative to the document
root of the server, not the context root of the application.  I've heard
that I have to make an alias, but I have no idea on what do to do and
where to put it.  Anyone know how to do this or have any knowledge of
references that address this problem?
