SimpleXpathAPI and //. expression

The Xalan 1.4 SimpleXPathAPI.exe doesn't appear to accept the XPath
expressions //. or //self:node() as its 3rd parameter (throwing a
XalanParserException).
These are equivalent, and one or the other is required to support XML-DSIG.

Or am I dreaming?

TIA
