question regarding encoding

Does Xalan pick up a document's encoding? Lets say an xml file specifies
its encoding to be "US-ASCII". If I have an xsl, which does not specify
any encoding, will the processor know that it mus keep the encoding to
US-ASCII and not UTF-8?

Thanks in advance
