Extending Pattern Layout vs. NDCs

Has anyone gone through extending the patternlayout according to

If so, what tradeoffs are there between adding new sources for layouts as
opposed to pushing them on a NDC stack?

Has anyone actually followed through with P. Gleazen's process and found it
worthwhile?
