SAX2 "characters" buffer size?

I should probably just dig through the code to find this out, but can
someone tell me how large the "characters" buffer is?  I was running
some tests the other day and I noticed it's more than 1k so I thought
I'd ask.  I'm expecting to push some decent-sized chunks of data through
this area and am wondering if I should tune it at all.
