trying to run tomcat on a different port

I'm trying to install tomcat 3.1 with jdk1.2.2 on a debian potato system.
Ideally, I'd like to run it out of apache but that isn't the point I'm
getting stuck at

I've done a build.sh and have the tomcat files in a dist/ directory.
I can't run the jserv process on port 8007. I have altered all the files
in the conf directory to refer to 8017 instead of 8007. But on start
up tomcat claims that the port address is already in use. 8017 is not in
use though!
I also tried altering all the addresses in src/etc/* from 8007 to 8017 and
doing a reinstall but that didn't work either

Where should I alter the this port address?

Hi
sounds to me like you're doing a standalone run, which will
listen on port 8080, not 8007|8017 - is there anything running
there? (like an old ver. of tomcat, a spare apache server, or
whatever?)
cheers
