Ben thanks for working on this.

I am hoping we could expose the stats without the need for JMX. For example JMX is not often possible in the cloud or some restricted environments.
So moving forward it would be best if Camel provided access to the stats regardless if JMX is enabled or not. However currently we don't have this.

I will add a note about this for the Camel 3.0 roadmap.

In the mean time we could rely on JMX in the camel-web to fetch the stats. However we need to honor if JMX has been enabled or not.
Also unit tests would be awesome.
