   Java 8 support has been dropped in the 2.0.x line (since 2.0.0-M1, Java 17 is the new minimum). The 1.x branches continue to support Java 8 as intended. Closing as completed — the semver-based approach agreed upon in this discussion is what was ultimately followed.
