Fetching the Dist jars

As I understand it a maven repository should have for each release
something like

groupID/jars
groupID/dist
groupID/pom

Is there a way of getting maven to download the dist for a given
release (if it exists) into the local repository and get the
information out as to where it is?

The reason I want to do this - is I can then extend the eclipse plugin
in to add the src.zip to the debugger src path - which I find very
useful.
