Custom Log

I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place but her it goes. I've
been trying to setup a custom log 
with the Referer and Agent included for each of my virtual domains.  It
works fine for a common log file 
but when I add \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\ to it apache doesn't
write to the logs. I want to make 
sure I am doing this correctly. What I did was use

LogFormat "%h %l %u %t \"%r\" %>s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\""
combined

CustomLog "|/usr/local/bin/apache-rotlogs /var/httpd/access_log-130 3600
combined

but this didn't work.
I was able to get extended logging to work this way
CustomLog /usr/local/apache/var/log/referer_log referer
CustomLog /usr/local/apache/var/log/agent_log agent

and this way
CustomLog /usr/local/apache/var/log/access_log combined

but we need to use the virtual domain way. Thank you for any help.
