how to suppress stderr messages

Hi,
I'm looking for a way to suppress stderrmessages in an appender. Log4j
is intercepting stderr (apparently) and assigning a priority level of
ERROR and formatting the error message, so it looks as though one could
filter out such messages.
Does this require creating a custom filter? or is there another way to
configure such behavior?
If I need to create a custom filter, can this be done with log4j 1.2.8
or should a later version from CVS be used?

TIA,
Lance
