[GitHub] [arrow] zhztheplayer opened a new issue, #34675: Checksum failed for boost 1.75.0

zhztheplayer opened a new issue, #34675:
URL: https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/34675

   ### Describe the bug, including details regarding any error messages, version, and platform.

   ```
   -- verifying file...
          file='/opt/gluten/ep/build-arrow/build/arrow_ep/cpp/build/boost_ep-prefix/src/boost_1_75_0.tar.gz'
   ```

   I bumped into this this morning when I build Arrow 11.0.0 's source code.

   It's weird that the build could succeed before. I manually downloaded the library then found that it matches the "actual" sha256sum:

   This might be an issue with the apache jfrog instance we use as the primary mirror which seems to be down/disabled at the moment. My guess is that the expected sha is for the trimmed boost source we host on jfrog and does not match the full sources published by boostorg.

   We should probably have a second checksom in the versions.txt/cmake to account for this case.

   > We can't change the sha in the 11.0.0 release but you can just install boost on the system you are building on and instruct cmake to use that instead of building from source (`-DBoost_SOURCE=SYSTEM`). That should be a workaround for this issue.

   Hi [assignUser](https://github.com/assignUser), `-DBoost_SOURCE=SYSTEM` indeed works well. Is it possible to specify a custom location of boost, other than the system boost? I tried to use `BOOST_ROOT`, according to the [C++ build guide](https://github.com/apache/arrow/blob/main/docs/source/developers/cpp/building.rst), but it seems to be ignored (tried both setting the environment variable and in the CMake command line).

   ### Steps to reproduce

   On a machine with docker:

   ```bash
   docker run --rm -e ARROW_R_DEV=true -ti glcr.b-data.ch/r/base bash
   ```

   In the container:

   ```bash
   apt-get update \
     && apt-get -y install --no-install-recommends \
       cmake \
       default-libmysqlclient-dev \
   No we have:
   ```
   if(DEFINED ENV{ARROW_BOOST_URL})
     set(BOOST_SOURCE_URL "$ENV{ARROW_BOOST_URL}")
   else()
     string(REPLACE "." "_" ARROW_BOOST_BUILD_VERSION_UNDERSCORES

     set_urls(BOOST_SOURCE_URL
              # These are trimmed boost bundles we maintain.
              # See cpp/build-support/trim-boost.sh
              # FIXME(ARROW-6407) automate uploading this archive to ensure it reflects
              # our currently used packages and doesn't fall out of sync with
              # ${ARROW_BOOST_BUILD_VERSION_UNDERSCORES}

     )
   endif()
   ```
   I guess maybe they have different hash tags. We can check it later
   Same issue is happening again, almost _exactly_ one year after the original bug was filed. That's a strangely coincidental time, but unclear if it's a coincidence.
   Yes. We have 2 Boost source archives. One is a trimmed version by us and another is the official version.
   Our checksum is for the trimmed version. So the checksum isn't matched with the official version.
   A solution was provided by @assignUser in https://github.com/apache/arrow/issues/34675#issuecomment-1478899978 :
   I see, thanks. And I also found that from official Boost site `aeb26f80e80945e82ee93e5939baebdca47b9dee80a07d3144be1e1a6a66dd6a` is suggested.
   I'm going to change the checksum from our forked Arrow repo, but still I assume the already-released Arrow 11 cpp code is currently not able to build. That might be hard to fix then.
   @shaharv Could you open a new issue for it? It's not related to this.
   > I assume the already-released Arrow 11 cpp code is currently not able to build. That might be hard to fix then.
   We can't change the sha in the 11.0.0 release but you can just install boost on the system you are building on and instruct cmake to use that instead of building from source (`-DBoost_SOURCE=SYSTEM`). That should be a workaround for this issue.
   Also meet the problem on ut and boost 1.81: https://github.com/apache/arrow/actions/runs/4486679773/jobs/7889390019?pr=34676
   This is very much ongoing for 15.0.0, 15.0.1, 15.0.2, 16.0.0.dev... from which I derive that either the system that handles hashes is not working or that neither of the download targets is working. I get the same as `[benz0li](https://github.com/benz0li)` for sourceforge and strange behavior with ifrog where t reliably fails from a frankfurt datacenter but seems to work in zurich. I tried boost version 1.81.0 (from source), 1.84.0 (seems to be pretty late) and 1.75.0 (referenced in this bug). So my conclusion is that this is something systemic. Unfortunately the boost version for arrow is a stripped down version (which is awesome to save network bandwidth and download time), so we cannot simply point to a local version--even if that was simple. Any other hacks to try in the meantime?
