Use of maven

Hi,

I had a look at HEAD, and was a little surprised by the way maven was set up
in wsrp4j. Is there a particular reason why src/main/java is not used for
the source? How are unit-tests handled?

Also, I'd really like to start using/contributing to this project, but I
found it relatively hard to find documentation. Is there any docs on how to
configure the proxyportlet?

Is head in a deployable state currently?

Stefan

As the volume of data to persist is small I was thinking on a simple
solution using some DAOs and JDBC: for the same reason I didn't
introduce Struts to the configportlet I'm not sure if we want to
introduce an ORM. But I'm open to suggestions :-)

I don't plan on a very complicated scenario, just a proof of concept to
show that the persistence layer is generic and allows other persistence
options (although I must say that I don't like those interfaces very
much). The idea is just to offer the option for db persistence, the
default behaviour would continue to be castor-based.

Diego.

Why do not use both? In the attached file I suggest a possible solution. Give me time to integrate the FACTORY METHOD design pattern in the suggested solution.

That's exactly the reason I want to add db persistence support to
wsrp4j, to be able to integrate the persistent data with the db used in
the backend by the portal.

Anyway, I need to do this work as part of an integration effort of
WSRP4J with a portal container developed in my university.

BTW, I'm Spanish xD

Hi Diego,

I had a small look at the persistence api.

Do yo up plan to embed a database like derby or hsqldb, or add broader db
support through the use of an ORM like hibernate? Is there really a need for
a db? Setup risks getting more complex.

Stefan

Well, probably it's legacy from the Maven1 migration, but let me tell
you that is a very minor issue (if you can even call it an issue, it's
only a semantic concern).

IBM donated the code and they were the original committers too, but it's
been almost a year without hearing from any of them. I guess they lost
interest on the project.

About the spec I'm sorry, but it's a road everyone using WSRP must pass
xD The WSRP Primer is the only thing I can think of for helping you (if
you haven't already read it). It contains some helpful visual examples
of the communication involved:
http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/download.php/10539/wsrp-primer-1.0.html

About how to become a committer, well, it's the usual Apache stuff. You
can read about it here: http://www.apache.org/dev/#committers. Just
start contributing and it will come along.

Regards.
Diego.

Hi,

I've actually been using maven2 for more than a year now, so I'm quite
familiar with the concepts. That's actually why I was wondering why the
source is located in src/java and not the standard src/main/java (I believe
src/java is what it used to be like in maven 1). Probably this should be
fixed at some stage in wsrp4j.

To bad you're the only active commiter - why is that? Has IBM been pulled
out of the project?

Also, I spent a couple hours reading through the wsrp 1 spec, but I find it
quite hard to get started. Where could I look for more information?

How do I become a commiter on this project?

Stefan

Hello Stefan:

The project is divided in several subsystems or modules, each of them
representing a clearly separated functionality and depending on the
other modules. Each one has its own src/java dir.

The code was initially donated by IBM as a contribution to the Apache
community, and it contained no unit-tests, but there won't be any
problem for adding them with the current repository. The bulk of the
work has been fixing bugs and trying to improve the code. I'm currently
involved on the following tasks:

1) Isolating pluto from proxyportlet (design done, only waiting for
implementation)
2) Completing config portlets for proxyportlet (almost finished)
3) Make producer work again. We got incompatibilities with the new Axis
version and it currently won't deploy. You can start trying to fix that
if you want :-)
4) Add support for the full WSRP specification, specifically, add
support for producer templates on both the consumer and the producer.
5) Add db support for the persistence layer (already studied the
persistence code, doesn't seem very difficult to add).

All of this I'm expected to finish it before the end of the year as part
of a project on my university.

There is very few documentation as I'm currently the only active
committer, so feel free to ask any question about the repository.

The proxyportlet is currently usable (I'm testing with Pluto Portal and
Jetspeed) and you can even try the configportlet, although I'm still
developing it. Take a look at the mail list archive for some info.

Regards.
Diego.
