Works for me (on Ubuntu) - TDB passes the string to the OS without alteration.

Please could you try without the additional description elements that do not relate to the directory (timeout, unionDefaultGraph).  

What's in the dataset?
Also, with no other TDB processes running,  try "tdbdump --loc quad-store/live"
